    Petroleum Contamination Mitigation

Here at North Texas Spill Response, our team has spent years studying the many different ways to approach petroleum remediation, from both groundwater contamination and soil contamination points of view. When a petroleum spill occurs, it can find its way into water sources through many means. Either through condensation from underground or aboveground storage tanks, tractor-trailer tanker spills, drawdown water, or through tanker ship water bottoms, if there’s a chink in the armor, petroleum will find a way. When an oil spill occurs on soil, we begin the site remediation process by carefully, but quickly assessing the contamination area. Once we find the origin of the spill, we initiate a plan to reconcile the contamination. Once the oil spill has been remediated from the spill site, through the use of regulatory compliant hazardous waste management procedures, we transport the waste material, including the contaminated soil, in a safe and legal manner. When an oil spill occurs in water, we conduct a similar assessment of the spill site and quickly set up industrial spill containment berms to ensure that contaminated water does not travel downstream and outside the spill containment area. And, in many cases, we can solve an oil spill on water through the use of ELMN8 to remediate the hazardous hydrocarbon threat that exists. In the case of a tractor-trailer tanker rollover, this aids in instantly opening closed roadways so that traffic can pass freely.

Hydro Excavation is the process of using water under pressure in conjunction with an industrial-strength vacuum to excavate and evacuate contaminated soil. Hydro Excavation, also referred to “hydrovac excavation” is used where conventional excavation is prohibitive due to tight spaces or other underground obstructions.

    In Situ Treatment

    What is In Situ Treatment

In situ treatment, or in situ soil remediation, involves applying biological material, chemicals, or other physical processes to the subsurface of contaminated soil in order to degrade, immobilize, or completely remove the contaminants on site. In situ simply means in place. And, one reason why in situ treatment is desirable is that it removes the contaminants from the soil without the removal of the majority of the soil around the contamination. This leads to a solution that is more environmentally friendly, as soil erosion is avoided. Another reason in situ treatment is beneficial is that it can reduce the overall cost of site remediation. Below are a few of the methods of in situ soil remediation.

    • Chemical oxidation in situ treatment
      • The process of chemical oxidation entails combining chemical oxidants with the contaminated soil. When the chemical oxidants react with the contaminants in the soil, the result is that they become less harmful. Hydrogen peroxide is effective at breaking down petroleum contaminants in soil.
    • Aeration
      • When hydrocarbons, which are the contamination produced by an oil or gas spill, are allowed to remain deep in the soil they do not dissipate on their own. But, when you turn up the contaminated soil and allow the hydrocarbon contaminated soil to interact with oxygen it speeds up the biodegradation of the contaminants in the soil.
    • Soil blending
      • Soil blending consists of adding uncontaminated soil to contaminated soil so as to dilute the soil contamination to acceptable levels. Of course, ongoing soil testing must be kept in place to ensure that the contamination of the soil remains at or below regulatory levels.
